AROME EXECUTIVE BOARD EDITORIAL January, 2009 |
|
The AROME organization has celebrated its 2nd birthday. Up till now we have held 3 conferences: a meeting on "Epidemiology and Means" that took place in Naples (Italy); a meeting on "Minimal Requirements and Standard guidelines" that took place in Istanbul (Turkey); and a meeting in Budva (Montenegro) where we dealt with clinical research. Proposals for clinical research were submitted and discussed and will hopefully lead to AROME clinical trials that take into account the Mediterranean specificities and needs. In addition we are planning a publication of tumor registry, epidemiology and means in the Mediterranean area with collaboration between AROME members who are expert oncologists, epidemiologists and community medicine professionals.
Since its inauguration, AROME experts have given lectures and teaching courses as well as on-site training to AROME member countries on various subjects such as evidence based oncology, GI, GU, breast cancer, lung cancer, radiotherapy and Head & Neck.
Within the framework of PARADISE palliative and pain control teaching program, the first course took place at the Oncology Division, Rambam Health Care Campus, Faculty of Medicine, Technion, in Haifa, Israel. The course was attended by a delegation from Albania.
A course for radiobiology is currently being planned to be held in Istanbul and will be run by Prof. Sedat Turkan and Prof Barry Rosenstein from New York. During the next AROME meeting in Djerba (Tunisia), experts will give the first AROME TEACHING COURSE IN ONCOLOGY for Juniors from the Mediterranean countries.
A new executive committee has been elected and the new committee salutes the departing committee and promises to continue with AROME activities of cooperation, partnership and educational programs in which members of more privileged countries assist those less fortunate.
On behalf of the AROME Executive Board: Y. Belkacemi A. Kuten
